Technology @ OHA

Today’s teenagers are bombarded with countless opportunities to connect with others and with the world.  Ironically, what could potentially prove to be such a positive learning force in their lives as students can also overwhelm them in other areas of life.  In fact, studies indicate that children now exhibit more behaviors associated with high anxiety than any generation before.  The deluge and constant lure of technology is certainly a factor.

As parents, it is not always easy to know where to establish limits, especially in regard to technology.  To what extent is my child’s cell phone problematic?  How do I effectively parent and lead my child by example when he knows more about technology than I do?  How can I allow her to explore the Internet for her studies and prepare for college while simultaneously protecting her from the many harmful distractions on line?  When is all of this continual access to technology too much for my child to handle?

At Oak Hill Academy we offer for our students an environment that promotes daily the responsible use of technology.  And we believe strongly that our approach enables teenagers to re-focus their priorities today so they can be prepared for the life of a successful college student tomorrow.

How do we accomplish this?  Three core beliefs guide the Oak Hill Academy approach to technology:

  1. For many students the universal availability of technology can be a distraction to academic success and a hindrance to the building of positive social relationships.
  2. Students can develop the ability to use technology in a responsible manner.
  3. Success in high school and college is contingent upon the healthy use of technology.

At Oak Hill Academy we believe that healthy boundaries are often a necessary component of teaching students how to secure for themselves academic achievement.  Cell phone use is allowed on campus only on weekends, internet access is filtered, and “screen time” is measured.  At certain times throughout the day attention must be directed to the important details of academic and social development; our approach to technology and our Laptop Program provide the requisite structure for this transition to occur.

Our academic and resident life curricula address the consequences and dangers of life in a fast-paced digital world.  And because we are preparing students for life in college, we implement graduated stages of accessibility to technology throughout their OHA tenure.
