Summer Session 2020

The Summer Session is a tradition at Oak Hill Academy.  It allows students and families to explore a new approach to developing good academic and social habits, while offering a very practical opportunity for grade improvement.  And for current OHA students who have begun to want more for themselves, the Summer Session is a continuation of the momentum they experience during the regular school year.  Overwhelmingly, students report that attending the summer session at Oak Hill Academy is a great investment of time, and a fun way to spend part of their summer.

When is the summer session?

The 2020 summer session will run for four consecutive weeks, beginning Sunday, June 28  and concluding Saturday, July 25, 2020.

Why take summer courses?

•To improve GPA by repeating courses, thereby broadening college options
•To improve one’s foundation in core subject areas in order to be more ready for college
•To lighten a heavy academic load for the following school year by taking a new course
•To get ahead in a subject area by taking a new course
•To achieve credits needed for graduation
•To take advantage of our college lab, where juniors can work on college applications
in the afternoons

What are the advantages of summer classes at Oak Hill?

•Students may repeat semesters of courses if needed (instead of repeating an entire year).
•Oak Hill’s policy for repeating courses is Grade Replacement: when a course is repeated, only
the second grade is calculated in the GPA. (The first course/grade still shows on
the transcript, but is not used in the GPA calculation.)
•The OHA summer term lasts only four weeks in the middle of summer, allowing for vacation time.
•Time is set aside for nightly study, and there is daily accountability for school work.
•Students engage in recreation and trips in the afternoons: hiking, canoeing, paintball, swimming, bowling, movie trips, etc.

What classes are offered during the summer session?

Summer classes include most English, math, science, social studies, and Spanish classes that are offered during the regular school year.

How much time do students spend in class?

During the summer session, classes run from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

How many classes can a student take during the summer session?

Students may take one new course (two new semesters) or repeat two courses (four semesters). An additional option is to repeat four semesters in four different subjects.

For students who need more than the standard amount of summer coursework, “tutoring” is offered in the afternoons. Tutoring refers to extra coursework in small classes with a 1:3 teacher-student ratio or less. Students needing this additional credit will miss afternoon recreation and return to the academic building to complete their coursework. Additional fees apply for tutoring.

What activities are offered after classes?

Recreational activities are planned throughout the summer session. These may include hiking, canoeing, paintball, bowling, swimming, and movie trips. Students may also participate in the Academy’s horseback riding program, and have access to the weight room and athletic facilities on campus.
