How to prepare for studying in the U.S.

Studying in the U.S.

Studying in the U.S. allows students the opportunity to develop their professional and academic skills while experiencing different world views and establishing international connections.

There are many advantages to studying abroad when receiving a higher education; these same advantages apply when going to boarding school. Like university, boarding schools prepare adolescents for independence in a nurturing environment.

At Oak Hill Academy, the student body is comprised of roughly 15% international students from all over the world. We maintain a small student body to promote community, which allows international and domestic students alike to build connections.

Application process for a Student Visa

Students requiring an F-1 student visa to study in the United States must receive official acceptance to a certified school in the United States before beginning the visa application process.  After the school issues the acceptance letter, they will collect important personal information and will usually require a payment or at least a deposit for security before creating the I-20 document. The I-20 form essentially proves that a student is embarking to the United States for the purpose of studying. All schools certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program require the completed I-20 form.

Once the I-20 form is submitted and processed, a I-901 SEVIS fee must be paid to the US government.

After payment of the I-901 SEVIS fee, the student must apply for a visa at a U.S. embassy. The U.S. embassy provides a directory for countries and their respective embassies.

Applying internationally can seem daunting, which is why we’re here to help. If you have any questions regarding the application process, feel free to reach out to our Office of Admission or request more information.
