Community Service through environmental stewardship

Being located in the mountains of Southwest Virginia, Oak Hill Academy is uniquely positioned to incorporate hands-on learning for environmental sciences. Oak Hill introduced our Environmental Literacy Initiative (ELI) in September 2020; the ELI has helped to shape students’ advocacy and understanding of our natural environment.

Through the ELI, students get opportunities to truly impact their environment in a tangible, discernible way.

On Saturday, April 2, a group of students planted 300 live stakes and 50 potted plants of various locally native species of shrubs and trees in partnership with the New River Conservancy.

By planting and caring for this riparian buffer, students took a step in caring for their world. They were able to see how their hard work can influence their surroundings.

It also allowed students to explore their physical and spiritual aptitudes by digging and planting saplings in the earth, tying into this year’s theme of #WarriorWellness.

Oak Hill Academy is grateful to the New River Conservancy for their continued partnership and this wonderful opportunity. Most of all, Oak Hill is thankful for the students who embarked on this journey of earthly stewardship.

Psalm 24:1-2

1The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.
