We recently went to Nashville. We were there only 24hrs and my sister gave birth to a healthy boy. This was very much a surprise, being he arrived 2 weeks early.
It was the best trip to TN so far !! The Duker name will carry on and watch closely, about 17 years from now, who knows, we may have a future Olympic skiier on our hands. When my sister asked me "how young can he start?" I laughed and said "Let me know when he makes those first steps....we'll start sizing baby boots"

Almost 30 Yrs. ago I started the journey that changed my whole life, the Oak Hill experience.
Without a doubt, Oak Hill is exactly what I needed at that time of my life.
To this day, as I look back at that time, I am grateful to have had Oak Hill and Dr. Patton in my life.
Thank you Dr. Patton for teaching me responsibility and accountability for my actions for which I still apply in my life and have taught my children.
For those of you who remember, I attended OHA with a sister, Sandy, and we will both be making the trip to Alumni Weekend this July.

HEY everyone !!! Happy Holidays !!
Life is moving fast here in WV. Mike and I bought a house on a mountain top with splendid views and lots of land. And a hunting cabin to boot. Dreams can come true. Is the small town of Monterville ready to hear my laugh echoing through the valley ?? To Rhonda, flying solo without a net, it is ok, will be riding Mikes soon. To DrG, get busy living or get busy dying, I choose the first, got too close to the latter and happiness can be found in between. To Ken B, I sure do miss you !! And to the kitchen crew....you all ROCK!!
I am managing a small deli at a local store, busy with order guides, par levels and food costs. I love every aching minute of it!! My turns are getting back to normal stregnth, I started racing again...zoom zoom. Ski safe, wear a helmet.
I will be an aunt this Spring, now how did this happen ?? LOL Deidre is having a little boy. I still can't believe she beat me to the punch on this one. In all due time.
And to Meredith F, YOU ARE SO CLOSE GIRL !! NOT MUCH TIME LEFT, and to HOUGH dorm, every so often you come to me in my dreams...that is close enough, from the house bell to the echos in the hallways.

My father, William Dennis Johnson transferred from Fredricksburg State Teacher's College in 1937 to Oak Hill Academy.
I think he was in Liberal Arts. He died soon after serving in WWII while I was a small child.
I never knew much about him and nothing about his family.
I had contacted Oak Hill but was told that many of the older records were destroyed in a fire.
I am looking for an annual from the year 1937 or 1936 if any former student or family member would have one. I would appreciate it very much as I loved my father very much and he died much too young.

Mr. Theodore Ussery of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, August 2nd. He is the father of Ted Ussery - '60 and Sarah Ussery Sink - '63.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 4, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral home in Martinsville. The fuenral service will be Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Starling Avenue Baptist Church in Martinsville.

She attended Cave Spring High School and graduated from Oak Hill Academy.
She was an accomplished custom builder in the Roanoke Valley and was President of Shenandoah Builders.

Well, Its been a while since I've given an update...if I remember last... I was touring the eastern hemisphere to enlighten my senses on a new culture .... some of you my have spoke to me amongst my return ...(JOINED THE COAST GUARD)
Anyway, all travels aside... I Always joked about going back to Lumberton NC (no diff than Greenbo AL) to find a good country girl. All Jokes aside ... I did and can safely say we are getting married on April 28, 2007.

Hey everyone, it is a slow season around here and we're kicking back and enjoying the down time. Mike and I will be traveling to TN soon. We are attending the CMT Awards. Then at the end of the month, I am going on an "Employee Retreat" with my co-workers. The owners of Big Spring Market are treating us to a week long vacation in ST JOHN !!
The siamese are doing great. Gypsy stalks the bird feeder in the yard and Mao will talk to anyone who will listen. We have a tabby cat named "Meme" and she has two calico kittens (born last week) Plenty of mouths to feed around here. Take care.

Hey there, well I just wanted to update all. My youngest son Jason is now out of bootcamp. Fort Benning is a great place. Jason is now at Fort Lewis, until they deploy him. Which that could be at anytime. This is my second son to be deployed. My oldest Danny did two tours. And no it doesn't get any easier. So please keep him( Jason) in your prayers.
I also just had first grand child. Born Dec 8th. A girl, her name is Jayden.
You know I really miss the days at the Hill, they were so simple now looking back.
For anyone thinking of going to Oak-Hill it well be the best time of your life. It well always be something that you well be proud of. Its an honor to have attended Oak-Hill. You may not know it now but one day you will.

I just wanted to drop a "HEY!!" Everything is great here in WV (except the skiing conditions) I am staying busy with work and making some slushy turns when I get the chance.
I am within hours of reaching my year anniversary of having my life turned upside down. I look back to all the changes and I laugh. Everything happens for a reason and what seemed really scary turned out to be the best thing for me. Surviving cancer made me see what is really important in life.
I was on the chairlift the other day with a tourist and his bad attitude and his lack of skill to ski slush, every word he spoke was in a mean tone. I quietly sat there SMILING and realizing just how lucky I am. Eight months ago I couldn't even carry my equipment, let alone ski the slush. And why be sad, I am SO lucky just to be here and be ALIVE. I think of my favorate quote "It is not what happens to you in life, It is how you react to it"
And to Ken B.... I miss you, you're the coolest.

I went to OHA in 74 & 75. If there is anyone that was there then, I would like to know. There are some of us still left. My class would have graduated in 77. I had to quit in 75. I had my son, and that has been 30 yrs.. uuuuuh! He was the only child I ever had,wouldn't have missed it for the world. I love OHA, oh not at first, but I really appreciate it being part of a great stage in my life. It was a wonderful, fun loving family there on campus and I really enjoy the pictures of the hill. I would recommend OHA to anyone, My niece may be enrolling. She is a 9th grader, hope she will.

Hey everyone on the hill, I justed wanted to say hello to all the staff, who I miss so much. It is so different being in college with so many students and so many staff members, and not being close to them as I was at Oak Hill. First let me thank Emma for that lovely message about Oak Hill faculty. Although my stay was short, I miss Oak and all its quirks. I hope that all my former students are doing well, and would love to hear from them! I have relocated to beautiful West Virginia (go Mountaineers!) and am enjoying my rustic lifestyle. Mr. Reedy shoveling coal is a common site, but can you picture me chopping wood? Substitute teaching is about as fun as bright lights study hall, and I have actually had a class worse than my 7th period. Who knew that 6th graders armed with plastic rulers was a recipe for complete disaster? Everyday I think about my old classroom, the lobster, and cafeteria french fries. I hope to visit soon and I promise to bring Montie (who now weighs 85 lbs!) Hello to all the faculty and staff...see you soon!

Hello everybody. I'm at Brevard College for my third year. Last year Randy Berry and Chauncy attended Brevard with me. This year, Sara Breamer and I have hung out and gone to Asheville to see Ali Landers and Mandy. And ya know, we all were talking about how we would not have made it without going to Oak Hill.
We still reminisce about the good and the bad.I'm working at a Funeral Home while here at school, and work at my family's funeral home when I go home. There's never a dull moment. Last year, I had the privilege of picking up Bob Denver from Gilligan's Island.
I'm even thinking about Divinity School after college. (thank you Reverend Turnmire) I've got a lot going for me. If it wasn't for Oak-Hill, I wouldn't have made it to college, and had the opportunity to spend a semester in Bolivia and Peru last year.

HEY THERE !!! Hi Christy, nice to see your post. How is Michelle? The cats are doing GREAT. Gypsy frequents the roof and Mao likes to chase the neighbor dog. We adopted a tabby, her name is MEME. The siamese like her. My health is slowly getting back to normal. My hair is another story, yes it is growing but it resembles a "Chia-Pet-Afro" The leaves are at peak here in WV and we're counting the days until the slopes open. Our 1996' OHA 10 Year reunion party is planned for September 29th and 30th at Shady Shack in Mouth of Wilson, VA. Everyone is invited that we went to school with. The official party will be on Saturday but feel free come on Friday. There will be a camping fee once we all arrive so bring a little cash for that.
It has been 10 years since most of us have seen each other and something tells me that once we all get together we ll find that we haven t missed a beat. A lot of us are planning on staying at Shady Shack and camping out. It is equipped with showers, electricity and changing rooms so unless you just can t fathom sleeping in the nice cool mountain, air come stay with us at Shady Shack. If not, I m sure most of you are intelligent enough to find a near by hotel and book a room.
On Saturday it s pretty much a free for all. Visit the campus, take a hike, go canoeing, hang out with old friends by the river.
Saturday evening we will be serving a Low Country Boil (shrimp, sausage, corn and Potatoes). It s going to be a BYOB party so don t forget to bring your favorite beverage before you come, as Grayson is a DRY COUNTY.
Saturday evening we are trying to get some music for you listening pleasure so that should be fun also.

Hey to everyone still at the Hill. Miss you guys like crazy even though I knew that I would. Just dropping in to say Hi to everyone there. Dr. Groves, I also wanted to thank you especially for everything you have done for me the past few years. Thanks for a chance to graduate. Rev. Turnmire, thank you for that class every morning. I told Kyle, Tyler and Sophia how much I enjoyed it and how I knew they would enjoy it to, and actually this year I am taking an Introduction to Islamic Civilization class this year. Mr. Dunlap, I just wanted to say thanks for everything. I have in fact joined the Army National Guard and I head out for Basic Training to Fort Benning, GA. I am starting just as mobile infantry and I work off of a Bradley APC. Thank you for all your counseling in that area. My recruiter is a great man and has taken very good care of me. Mrs. Bonham THANK YOU for your help and patience in math class. Holy cow I would be completed ruined by now without your help. I am taking the toughest math class I have ever taken and I use all that you have taught me to help get through it.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I really miss Oak Hill. Actually, I can believe it, because over the 2 and a half years I spent there, you all became a second family to me. When I called you, you told me to write something in the guestbook so you could read it in homeroom. I've been trying to think of what I could say to the new seniors and underclassmen that would be of any value to them. So here it goes. I could say what most people who come to Oak Hill say: "Oak Hill really isn't as bad as you think and it will pay off in the long run," but thinking back, that isn't what I remember the most. While it is true that Oak Hill gave me the opportunity to grow up and succeed, it is the devoted, caring people who work there who made it such a memorable experience for me. I was closer, and still am, to more faculty and staff than I was to students. What most of the students don't realize is that they are real people too. Underneath their constant watch for Dress Code Violations and homework deficiencies they are great people and they really do care about you. They laugh, cry, and joke just like you, and, believe it or not, they do have lives outside of the Mouth of Wilson. My advice to you is to give them a chance to show you their other sides, rather than rebelling against them all the time, because 99.9% of the time, they'll get over it and you'll get in trouble. Anyway, to the faculty and staff, I miss you all so much. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you the most, and thank you for caring about and seeing the real me. Have a great school year and don't be surprised if you see me one day on campus!

Well, it's my second week of college here in the fabulous city of Richmond... I only have 4 classes, which is really nice. They are all actually on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. I have just gotten to school and my life is so busy. I have one 5 page paper due on a book I just got this upcoming Monday!! Oak Hill Academy is not a "diploma mill." Such is the July 21 judgment by NCAA representatives Kevin Lennon and Jennifer Strawley. (Lennon serves as Vice President for Membership Services and Strawley serves as Director of Membership Services.) After being placed on a July 5 list of schools "subject to further review," NCAA concerns about Oak Hill Academy were alleviated during a campus visit earlier this week.

I always knew that if the NCAA visited our campus any questions concerning Oak Hill Academy's academic program would be quickly resolved. Although it is disappointing to have our honor ever called into question by anyone, I am pleased that Oak Hill's legacy of academic integrity has been affirmed by the NCAA.

Oak Hill Academy continues its mission of serving as a turning point for young men and women. Students who are in need of a structured, nurturing, and non-military environment in which to improve their opportunities for success will always benefit from our academic and boarding program.

So, life is good. I am working 3 jobs, one is at PetSupermarket fulltime, and I am also babysitting for a lady and her two kids twice a week for 8 hours. I am also working with an autistic boy working on cognativbe skills with one other girl named Ashley. In a July 5 news release to the media, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) chose to include Oak Hill Academy as one of 22 schools whose academic program is currently under review. Given our 127-year record of academic integrity, we are shocked and disappointed to be included on such a list.

Oak Hill Academy is proud of our success rate with all of our students. We have always worked closely with the NCAA Clearinghouse and no aspect of our academic program has ever been called into question. Oak Hill Academy is fully accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools and is recognized as accredited by the Virginia Council of Public Education and the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education.

To date, no representative from the NCAA has ever visited Oak Hill Academy to investigate any concerns. We welcome the NCAA to our campus and we encourage them to move expeditiously to clear our fine name.

Most people will be camping ( S.S. has showers, changing rooms etc. etc.) but you can stay where you like. Saturday will pretty much be a free for all with canoeing, visiting campus, hiking etc. etc. Saturday night we are going to have a band play and have a cookout. Possibly Low Country boil or BBQ. It's BYOB so dont forget. To make sure we have enough food we are asking people to RSVP so shoot me an e-mail and let me know what your deal is. If your e-mailing with regrets be prepared for a lecture!
